Escape Through The Stone Gate
Oh how I love summer. The sunshine, pool, beach, cookouts, long nights and a relaxed schedule. As much as I enjoy the time with the kids, the summer months have proven to be the best time for me to really get in good quality time in the sewing room. My mama used to say “get your work done first and then you can play.” So, I try to get my household duties done early in the day, get the kids settled with an activity, and then I escape to the sewing room. The kids know that mama needs time alone in order to learn new skills but they have also learned that allowing mama to escape into the sewing room often leads to a calmer mama.
Current Projects
So now that July is upon us, summer break is coming to a close (we homeschool our three). How am I spending my precious time? I’m finishing up my personal version of an Around the World quilt.
It is made of scraps given to me from other quilter friends of my mom. I have decided that it will be the first piece that I will attempt to free-motion quilt. I’m excited about the possibilities. This project is far from perfect, but I didn’t set out to create an error-free piece. It has been fun piecing 2 1/2 inch squares together and that is exactly where I have found the joy in the creative process. The color play, the layout, and now the free-motion quilting. There will be dozens of other quilts created for perfection, but this will not be one of them.
Whats Next?
This month will be full of school planning, curriculum shopping, camp, and family vacations, so quilting time will be squeezed in on the few open days. I’ll be researching basting methods, free motion-quilting patterns and tutorials. There will be planning for fall opportunities and figuring how to develop this new creative outlet of a blog. Like my Facebook page to make sure you don’t miss anything.
Join me on my journey and lets escape to the sewing room through the Stone Gate.
